What is a toxic strain?

Modified on Thu, Feb 2, 2017 at 12:23 PM

Toxic strains are those that produce toxic compounds (e.g. saxitoxins, microcystins, anatoxins, nodularins). There are many strains of algae that produce toxins. Two groups that are particularly known for this are Dinoflagellates and Cyanobacteria. Not all species in these groups produce toxins, but caution should be observed when working with those that do.
