How do I properly dispose of the algal cultures?

Modified on Thu, Feb 2, 2017 at 12:29 PM

Please protect our environment by observing proper precautions when disposing algal cultures. UTEX cultures may be discarded safely only after sterilization to kill all living organisms.

  • UTEX agar cultures are sterilized by autoclaving at 121 ºC at 15 psi for 35 minutes.
  • UTEX liquid cultures are sterilized and discarded as follows:
    1. Add household bleach to the culture to a final concentration of 5 % (v/v),
    2. Leave the culture exposed to the bleach solution for at least one hour,
    3. Filter the bleached culture through coarse filter paper,
    4. Discard the residue and filter paper as any harmless solid waste,
    5. Discard the liquid filtrate as any harmless liquid waste.
